exci is excited to announce that our advanced AI-driven bushfire detection technology will enter Phase 2 of its trial in Victoria, following a successful Phase 1 during the 2023-24 fire season. This initiative is part of a $1.5 million investment from the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund to explore the potential of artificial intelligence for early bushfire detection in collaboration with Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic).
The trial will assess exci’s innovative AI forest fire detection system, which uses real-time images from ground-based cameras to monitor smoke. This system complements FFMVic’s Fire Lookout Observers and provides continuous 24/7 monitoring, even when lookout stations are unstaffed. exci’s AI technology aims to strengthen early detection capabilities, helping protect communities, infrastructure, and vital natural resources from the devastating impacts of bushfires.
Phase 1 involved successful smoke detection trials at several fire lookouts, and Phase 2 will expand to new sites across Victoria. This trial represents a significant step forward in using AI to enhance community resilience to natural hazards. If successful, the trial may be expanded to additional locations, potentially leading to a comprehensive remote detection strategy across the state.
For more details on this government-supported initiative, see the official media release from the Minister for Emergency Management.
